Known, among other things, for his leadership in pharmacy practice management, Mr. John L. Sonderegger was the embodiment of the ideals of social and administrative pharmacy which this Center sets out to further. A talented and productive man, Mr. Sonderegger brought good humor, wisdom, and political savvy to all areas of his work, first as Comptroller of Rennebohm Drug Stores for 24 years, then as president and treasurer of Rennebohm Drug Stores for 22 years, then as chairman of the board and CEO for two years. Mr. Sonderegger merged Rennebohm Drug Stores into Walgreen Drug Stores. He was secretary and treasurer of the Oscar Rennebohm Foundation from its inception and later its president. In addition, he was president and treasurer of the board of directors of Wisconsin Life Insurance Company for 12 years. He was president and CEO for two years, then merged Wisconsin Life Insurance Company into Central Life of Des Moines, Iowa, and was chairman of the board of Central Life Insurance for two years until his retirement.

In the late Seventies and early Eighties, there had yet to be formed a research center dedicated to the study and furtherance of social and administrative pharmacy. That absence was particularly felt at the University of Wisconsin where its School of pharmacy had been one of the first in the country to offer a Masters and Doctorate in Pharmacy Administration and Social Studies in Pharmacy. It was no coincidence, therefore, that the School should sense the need for a center for social and administrative pharmacy that was lacking in this country. At the same time, the Rennebohm Foundation with its former chain of pharmacies throughout Dane County was wishing to contribute a substantial endowment to the continuation of the ideals that had characterized its community pharmacies throughout the state. What followed, in August 1984, was a marriage of ideals embodied in the person of John L. Sonderegger, longtime Comptroller and President of the Rennebohm Drug Stores. We are very grateful for the establishment of the Center by the Rennebohm Foundation and for its embodiment as part of the Wisconsin Idea.
